The apprenticeship for Ironworkers Local #399 consists of three years of classroom instruction and on the job training.  Classroom related instruction is Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  The most important and most rewarding part of the apprenticeship is on-the-job training.  Apprentices are coached and mentored by qualified journeymen on the job site.  Apprentices are expected to work 2,000 hour a year when work is readily available.  Apprentices must complete 1,400 hours of OJT  to advance to the next level each year.  The combination of the classroom and on-the-job training produces a well trained, qualified journeyman.

Journeyman upgrading classes are also offered and recommended to all active members.  Local #399 offers welders certification testing in SMAW, FCAW, GMAW and GTAW in all positions.  Test coupons are inspected, cut and bend tested on site, under the supervision of the welding instructor.
