Ironworkers Local #399 conducts apprenticeship training at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology located in Sewell, NJ.  GCIT provides Local #399 with several modern classrooms for instruction and a state of the art AWS certified welding shop.  The union also conducts several safety courses including OSHA 10, OSHA 30, OSHA Sub Part R, and CPR/ First Aid training at the Union Hall day room.

The apprenticeship for Ironworkers Local #399 consists of three years of instruction.  Classroom related instruction is Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  The most important and most rewarding part of the apprenticeship is on-the-job training.  Apprentices are coached and mentored by qualified journeymen on the job site.  Apprentices are expected to work 2,000 hour a year when work is readily available.  Apprentices must complete 1,400 hours of work place training to advance to the next level each year.  The combination of the classroom and on-the-job training produces a well rounded qualified journeyman.

Journeyman upgrading classes are also offered and recommended to all active members.  Local #399 offers welders certification testing in SMAW and FCAW in all positions.  Test coupons are inspected, cut and bend tested on site under the supervision of the welding instructor Chris Leidy CWI with oversight by Gary Brown who is also a  CWI and CWE.
